How does acupuncture work?
According to the Nei Jing, the outside of the body is connected with the inside via the channel/meridian system, each channel relates to certain organ. The channel is the pathway of the body’s Qi, or energy. Any problems on the inside will manifest symptoms on the outside.
Needling the acu-points of the affected channel can restore proper working order of the Qi, or energy that flows in the channel and organ, thereby actually treating the cause of the disease not only symptoms.
Do you reuse the needles?
No. All needles are disposable, and are only used once.
Does acupuncture treatment hurt?
No. Most patients say that they feel little to no discomfort from the needle. The needle insertion sensation is less than getting a shot, injection from a syringe.
How long are the needles retained?
Needle retention time varies depending on the different techniques applied or the individual meridian affected. In most cases, the needle is not retained very long at all.
Retaining the needles for 20-30 minutes for each treatment means that the acupuncturist does not know proper acupuncture techniques, and this can cause problems for the patient later.
How many needles are used?
It depends on the problem. More points may be used to treat less severe problems like muscle problems. More severe internal medical problems require even less points, approximately three. Using too many can injure the patient. Many needles shows the poor quality of an acupuncturist’s technique.
How many treatments do I need before I feel a difference?
For most cases the patient should feel relief right after the first treatment.
How many treatments do I need?
The frequency of treatment depends on the diagnosis. Each problem is different. One should follow the recommendation of the acupuncturist to get the best result from acupuncture.
I have to get treatment regularly even after I’ve been cured?
No.
Is acupuncture treatment completely safe?
No. Eastern Medicine is like any other medical practice, it can help patients if done correctly. It can also harm patients if the acupuncturist does not know the protocol of the Nei Jing. The Nei Jing includes many chapters discussing malpractice to warn acupuncturists. Unfortunately, few acupuncturists are aware of this.
